President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner Enjoy A Round Of Golf At Andrew's Air Force Gold Course

President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner (R) Enjoy A Round Of Golf At Andrew’s Air Force Golf Course

The government “shutdown” has been quite a game of political theater. Most every essential government function remains intact, and furloughed government workers are still receiving their pay for now.

The Obama administration is threatening to cancel the Air Force, Navy football game. However, both athletic clubs receive private funding.

“There would be no cost to the government, there are zero appropriated funds in terms of conducting this contest at the Naval Academy,” Navy athletic director, Chet Gladchuk said. “It has no affect on the budget of the government one way or the other. What it does is that it eliminates the opportunity for the academy to generate critical revenue to support 33 varsity sports.”

The Air Force football team remains a member of the Mountain West Conference. According to Craig Thompson, Mountain West commissioner, institutions have $2.5-3 million in conference distributions, which each team may use at their disposal however they wish.

So again, the government wouldn’t have to pay one red cent to fund the game.

The story continues at Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota. The National Park Service recently shut down the state’s most visited tourist attraction. However, they also placed cones blocking off the road for miles so that tourists couldn’t even snap pictures from the outlook points leading up to the actual monument.

According to Jim Hagen, secretary of South Dakota Department of Tourism, “They won’t even let you pull off on the side of the road. I just don’t know what they’re trying to accomplish.”

However, in case that’s not enough theater, the feds went after privately owned Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington. The property is owned and financed by the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association.  The federal government also closed access to the property’s parking lots shortly after they barricaded WWII veterans from viewing their memorial close to the National Mall.

Anyone who can’t see that the shutdown is little more than theater simply isn’t paying attention. If the above examples aren’t enough for you then look no further than to President Obama’s favorite golf course, which remains open. President Obama frequents Andrew’s Air Force Base Golf Course, which boasts three 18-hole courses. It is located on prime Washington D.C. property.

According to the PGA the US government spends an average of  $384,000 – $1,000,000 per year on every golf course it owns. The federal government  operates some 234 golf courses around the world. Combined, that’s a total of about $140 million per year on golf courses.

The course remains open. Officials cite that the course receives payments from private individuals on snacks and course fees, but it is clear that the courses still run on tax payer dollars. Many federal golf courses are also national parks, such as Yosemite National Park Golf Course.

Even so, how is that any different than the privately owned Mt. Vernon, or the WWII memorial, which has zero staff or operational costs. How is it different than the privately funded Air Force, Navy athletics departments? Why block people from taking pictures of a rock more than a mile away from the actual entrance?

The difference is that the other cases wouldn’t affect Obama and his pals directly. They only affect “we the people”.

This article is a complete lie. There was obviously no research or review by the writer or anyone who reviewed the article. Military golf courses are self supporting and do not involve any U.S. tax dollars. Next time look into a subject so you do not look like an idiot to everyone.

Stupid GOP shuts down Government then complains that it is closed. Boehner caves on ACA, debt limit. This is the most dramatic political suicide since old Mr. 47%. What was his name again?

Seeing several posters point out the difference between military base golf courses (which are funded by user fees, (not money appropriated by the Congress: and those operated by the Parks Services gives me faith that we’re not a total nation of imbeciles. So, not mentioned is that ALL golf courses on military bases remain open. Sad .that the writer is so clueless and misleading.

So there are still shameless, Kool-Aid drinking, Obama-policy lovers left, oblivious to the vindictive way he is gets back at republicans by destroying people’s lives. (Not an exaggeration; an 80 year old couple was kicked out of their home because Obama had the road miles from Mr. Rushmore. And don’t forget all the honor flights to WWII memorial.) Don’t blame Obama? Do you think if I know about this, that he doesn’t? Maybe I’m just smarter than him.

Actually, there IS another National Park that is not closed. It is known as Presidents Park! (google it) You can be it will NOT be closed, EVER, because it includes the White House. You don’t REALLY expect the head of the NPS to tell the occupants of President’s Park to vacate the premises, do you? Or, to tell the staff that due to the government shutdown they are furloughed?

The math on the total amount spent on golf courses per year has a typo. It is supposed to say Billion.

I’m sorry, but this story is ridiculous and written with extreme amounts of bias. Hill Air force Base golf course is open, so is Nellis. And the story only suggested that Obama’s favorite golf course is still open, not that he was out playing.
    Talk about spin.

Obama can close our golf courses, send Park Rangers to block and close private businesses on Park Land, block state and county roads to a Mt Rushmore so nobody can even take a picture, but he can still play golf? Somebody who can file it, needs to file a legal law suit to block his stupid stunts.

Well if you do a little research the WWII memorial only sits on federal land. It was completely funded with private monies and is maintained with said monies….

This president is playing political games. The Republican house is passing funding bills that the Democrat Senate is blocking. The House has the right to fund the government how it pleases as per the Constitution.

Did a quick Search, easy to do. A great number of Gulf courses are ran and operated by The national part Department, funded and staffed. I think the point to this article that many of you are dogging it are missing is simple. Weather or not the one that this article is about or not. He closes the veterans memorial, something that cost more to close than leave open, and then goes golfing instead of trying to work on the financial situation. Also they closed the eateries, and stores on the base. I do not care were the funding came from it should be shut down, and the funds used to take care of the troops at the base.

You have to ask… If ‘We the People’ are NOT allowed to use any of the shut down parks that are own by our federal government, then WHO actually owns those lands in question? Did the U.S. Gov’s rent check stop to the actual owner of those lands? Because, there isn’t any plausible reason to keep ‘We the People’ off our Country’s owned lands UNLESS the U.S. Gov sold them off. Time to get rid of the whole stinking Congress, Judicial, AND especially the Executive Branch.

How petty this is. The golf course at Andrews Air Force Base is funded by user fees and therefore, the links remain open. Turns out the Gov’t doesn’t fund Military Golf Courses!!

  18. October 6, 2013 at 2:38 pm

O’bumbler and his crew are above the laws they mandate for the rest of us “lower people”. IF somebody checked the 28th Amendment, they might find out that “O-care” is unconstitutional in that the “elected elite” are exempt from it. It seems to be a case of, “DO AS I SAY, not as I do.”

Derrick is correct. I was formerly stationed at Andrews AFB and the Golf Course is classified as a Category C,recreational facility which means that 100% of its operation is financed through user fees (nonappropriated funds). It’s easy to point fingers to try to shame, but at least get your facts right!

Terrssa, that is only until their funding runs out, I have a friend that works for them and they were told there is only enough money for them to give out benefits for about 4 weeks and then they are shut down like the rest of the government.

I think it’s disingenuous to use a picture of John Boehner and the president golfing that was taken two years ago, surely there was another shot of the golf course you could have used. It seems you would like to imply that they are golfing and enjoying the time during the shut down.

Not that they did anything before hand to avert it. I really wonder why more people didn’t complain over the result in the House of Reps in 2012. The republicans only won a majority there because they gerrymandered the shit out of every state in their control. It’s the democrats fault for not pointing it out for the malrepresentation that it creates. Although I guess the reason they don’t point it out is they hope to do it themselves later.

When they tell the border patrol to stop what they are doing, all other cards are off the table. So golf is OK but border protection is not? If not illegal it is certainly in very VERY poor taste. But then again, when has that ever stopped any POTUS? Think before you vote next time. (for once)

“The seeming randomness of the U.S. government’s first shutdown in 17 years can be explained in part by anomalies in the spending Congress does and doesn’t control…

The Andrews Air Force Base golf course is funded through user fees and that’s why it remains open, said Air Force Captain Lindy Singleton, chief of public affairs for the 11th Wing at Andrews.”

Also, golf courses aren’t national parks.

    Try real journalism.

A golf course on an AFB is not a national park. It is a golf course on an Air Force Base.

There are quite a few essential functions that are not functioning. One of the most important is WIC, which many women, infants, and children depend on in order to get enough calories. Regardless of your opinion in how they got into the situation of needing WIC, I’m guessing that you don’t believe they should starve.

And Mount Vernon remains open. It is not and was never closed. The National Park Service attempted to barricade them, but took away the barricades as soon as they realized that there was a mistake. The NPS maintains the Mount Vernon parking lots, but the property is owned privately.
